Unrealistic Social Media Expectations Leaving You Unfulfilled?
Feb 14, 2025
Social media often presents a curated, filtered version of reality that leaves us feeling inadequate. I remember when I started to feel bad about a life I was living. It was probably around 2010 or so. I saw all these beautiful moments in other people's lives and honestly, all we were doing was working - all the time. How beautiful is that? I made the decision that I just couldn't afford to keep feeling bad about the life we were building. We had kids to take care of and I needed to shift my focus back to the family. So, I turned away from social media until I was more secure, more stable, less in comparison mode. The constant comparison to idealized lives leads to feelings of dissatisfaction and disconnection. A kind of wondering - what's wrong with us? We can combat this by being mindful of our social media consumption, follow accounts that inspire and uplift, not those that trigger comparison. Pay attention to your feelings. Set intentional boundaries on what content resonates with you. Allow yourself time and space when you need it. And acknowledge that none of us have perfect, gorgeous lives all the time. And that is just a fact!
